Jubileumconcert Johan de Meij 15/3/2013 @ "deSingel"
FBB kwam in contact met Johan de Meij tijdens onze concert tour in New York (VS) in April 2012. Sindsdien is er een hechte vriendschap ontstaan tussen Johan en de Band. In New York traden we olv Johan op tijdens 3 concerten, waar we tevens de Amerikaanse premiére van "Sinfonietta" van zijn hand hebben uitgevoerd. Op deze VS-tour stelde Johan ons de vraag om samen met hem een Jubileumconcert te organiseren ter gelegenheid van Johan's 60ste verjaardag. FBB antwoordde hier natuurlijk onmiddellijk positief op.
2013 is niet alleen een jubileumjaar omwille van Johan's 60-ste verjaardag, maar tevens ook het Jubileumjaar van zijn wereldberoemde 1ste Symfonie voor Harmonieorkest: "The Lord of the Rings" (TLOTR). Dit vieren we natuurlijk ook tijdens dit concert. Voor deze gelegenheid heeft FBB de Koninklijk Muziekkapel van de Gidsen uitgenodigd. Niet toevallig "de Gidsen", want zij speelden 25 jaar geleden op 15 maart 1988 de wereldpremière van deze prachtige symfonie. Wij hopen u allen ter verwelkomen op deze onvergetelijk avond.

Conductor Festival Brass Band at "Jubelee concert Johan de Meij"on the 15th of March 2013
Wij zijn vereerd opnieuw Dirk De Caluwé te kunnen engageren voor ons concert op 15 maart in "deSIngel" ter gelegendheid van het 25-jarig jubileum van Lord of the Rings en de 60ste vejaardag van Johan de Meij.
Dirk zal de band, na ons avontuur op de Belgische Brass Band Kampioenschappen 2012, weer onder z'n vleugels nemen. Hij zal de band voorbereiden op de werken die Johan met FBB zal dirigeren en Dirk zal de avond zelf "Extreme Make Over" van Johan's hand voor zijn rekening nemen. De band is er alvast van overtuigd dat Dirk weer het onderste uit de kan zal halen.
Dirk bracht de Band naar een 2de plaats op de laatste kampioenschappen. We hopen met hem opnieuw hoge toppen te kunnen scheren en van 15 maart 2013 een datum te maken die we niet vlug zullen vergeten.

The overture recounts the magical re-awakening of spring’s arrival in Sweden. After a long and dark winter, creatures great and small join Swedes desperately longing for the first rays of warming sunshine.
A melancholic, haunting song is first heard from afar (När som jag var på mitt adertonde år – ‘As I was on my 18th year’). Various instruments from different locations in the concert hall are echoing the solitary female voice. The aching, soulful melody gradually transforms to a polka-like variant that builds to the joyful, optimistic Spring main theme. Creatures venture out from a long hibernation, people emerge from their homes to celebrate, and the main theme converts again into an even more jubilant, fast dance-like scene. At this point, another well-known Swedish folksong appears as a counter melody (Ack Värmeland du sköna – ‘Oh Värmland Thou Art Beautiful’) thematically supporting the giddy celebrants. It is first introduced by a brass quartet (2 cornets, alto horn & euphonium) and crescendos into the full, satisfying sounds of complete brass choir.
Johan de Meij’s first symphony “The Lord of the Rings” is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book.The movements are:

Extreme Make-over consists of a number of musical metamorphoses on a theme from Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s well-known Andante cantabile (the second movement of his String Quartet No. 1 in D, Op. 11, written in 1871). “Never in my life have I felt so flattered, never have I been so proud of my creative powers as when Lev Tolstoy sat in the chair next to mine listening to my Andante, and the tears ran down his cheeks,” wrote the composer in the winter of 1876 on the occasion of a special concert organised for Tolstoy at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1888 Tchaikovsky arranged this movement for cello and orchestra.
The main theme of the Andante cantabile is based on a Russian folksong. In Extreme Make-over this theme is introduced in its original form by a brass quartet consisting of two cornets, alto horn and euphonium. At the theme’s reprise, muted cornets sneak, almost inaudibly, alongside the four soloists and elongate each note of the melody, as though the sustaining pedal on a piano has been depressed. The first metamorphosis emanates from a single tone, to which the two successive tones from the theme are added in bell-like chords. The addition of the lower second results in a completely new sound world, completing the first metamorphosis. Anticipating the canonic theme from the finale, a timpani solo forms the transition to the Alla marcia. This movement is composed in a robust neo-classical style and is peppered with quotes, including fragments from Tchaikovsky’s Fourth and Sixth Symphonies and the Fantasy-Overture Romeo and Juliet.
The following movement features a rather unconventional instrumental group: ten tuned bottles, played by members of the cornet section. This group eventually provides the accompaniment for an extensive marimba solo, gradually producing a sort of gamelan effect. In composing for the tuned bottles I have applied the ‘hoketus’ technique: each player produces a single note of the melody or the chord.
This fragile movement is joined seamlessly to the finale, a canonic treatment of the theme. Hurtling through each instrumental group, it leads us to a festive conclusion.
This masterpiece will be conducted by Dirk de Caluwé.
The Ceremonial Fanfare was originally written for orchestral brass and percussion, commissioned by The Orchestra Osaka Symphoniker from Osaka, Japan. The world première performance took place on April 12, 2005 at The Symphony Hall in Osaka, conducted by maestro Heiichiro Ohyama.
In April 2009, the combined brass sections of the New York Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra gave an impressive performance in New York City. The concert commemorated the Henry Hudson Quadricentennial and 400 years of friendship between The United States and The Netherlands.
This version for brass band was written at the request of EBBC, the European Brass Band Contest 2012 in Rotterdam, to serve as the opening fanfare of the festival.
Unlike most of Johan's compositions, Sinfonietta No. 1 is an abstract, non-programmatic work. It consists of three movements, in which the thematic material of the opening measures – an upward fifth jump – returns in various shapes and forms throughout the piece. The slow middle section features solo passages by E-flat tuba, flugelhorn and euphonium, all starting with the same fifth jump. The final movement presents an Elgar-like march theme, interspersed with quotes from the second movement, and ending with the opening theme of movement I.

Sax 'O Brass is een eindwerk georganiseerd door 2 zesdejaars van de kunsthumaniora Brussel.
Thomas Roelants (onze principal assistant cornet) en zijn klasgenoot Maarten Vergauwen (alt-saxofoon) presenteren jullie een concert dat uit zowel het klassieke als het lichtere repertoire is samengesteld.
De werken worden begeleid door Festival Brass Band.
Allen welkom op 2 mei om 20u te CC Belgica, Kerkstraat 24, Dendermonde.

Jubileum Concert in de WIK

Op 10 maart wordt een HaFaBra concert georganiseerd ter ere van het jubileumjaar '100 jaar WIK'.
Het Koninklijk Harmonie Orkest van Schelle en Festival Brass Band werden uitgenodigd door Fanfare "Willen is Kunnen" (WIK) om hun jublieumjaar te openen. Centrale gast is niemand minder dan onze eigen MD, Manu Mellaerts, die met elk van de eerder genoemde orkesten als solist zal aantreden.
U wordt van harte uitgenodigd op deze speciale gelegenheid!

Als eerste Belgische/Vlaamse Brass Band draagt Festival Brass Band onze cultuur uit aan de andere zijde van de Atlantische oceaan.
Tussen 7 en 15 april 2012 staan in New York reeds drie concerten op het menu van Festival Brass Band.
Onze leden halen de werkingskosten voor bijna 100% uit eigen middelen.
Dit is niet anders voor de concertreis naar New York, wat voor velen van onze muzikanten en bestuur een flinke hap uit het huishoud/vakantiebudget betekent.
U kunt dit project op verschillende manieren aanmoedigen of steunen door:
1. uw aanwezigheid op het concert in Kortenaken,waar de opbrengst van de catering rechtstreeks naar het New York fonds van Festival Brass Band gaat. Degenen die ook inschrijven op het ‘ Dinner ‘ worden om 18 uur verwacht in de als restaurant ingerichte “Foyer“
2. onze speciaal hiervoor samengestelde "Live CD" aan te schaffen
3. als supporter van "Festival Brass Band goes USA" een bijdrage naar keuze te storten.
Wij hopen jullie alvast te kunnen begroeten op 5 februari in Kortenaken.

Om de kosten van de “FBB to the USA” concertreis te helpen verlichten, wordt een aantal activiteiten opgezet. De concertagenda van het seizoen 2011 – 2012 wordt wat aangedikt, de beste opnames van concerten en concours worden op CD geperst en we verzamelen onze culinaire ervaringen, opgedaan op VIP-recepties in eigen beheer, om een eetdag te organiseren. Het jaarlijkse “try-out” concert voor het Belgisch Brass Band kampioenschap wordt voor de gelegenheid uitgebreid met een maaltijd.
Klokslag 1 week voor het nationaal Belgisch Brassband Kampioenschap houdt Festival Brass Band traditioneel een Try-Out concert. De band is dan in volle voorbereiding van het kampioenschap en laat de prestaties al eens een eerste keer los op een kritisch publiek. Na het optreden wordt een menu geserveerd. Er is keuze tussen ½ kip en ribbetjes, met frieten en een slaatje. Er is eveneens een kindermenu, zo spaart u de babysit.
